Circular economy in Cyprus is still in its early stages of development. While there have been some efforts to promote sustainability and waste reduction, the country still primarily operates on a linear economic model, where resources are extracted, used, and discarded.
However, there are increasing initiatives by both the government and private sector to transition to a more circular model, such as the implementation of recycling programs and the promotion of sustainable consumption and production practices. Further development of the circular economy in Cyprus will likely require increased investment in waste management infrastructure and a shift in the national mindset towards more sustainable consumption patterns.
The government has implemented a National Action Plan to promote Circular Economy that includes four main pillars focusing on citizen awareness and incentives for investment in cyclical products and processes.
Nevertheless, there are still improvements to be made on infrastructure for cyclical industrial products, and there is still scepticism from the industry to take on fully circular economy processes and procedures. Economic costs are a barrier for implementing circular economy and for Cyprus there is still a limitation of funding in applying circular economy processes.
